An Intriguing Cinematic Journey with Historian Ivan Lujo

For decades, filmmakers have been 'crazy' about Župa dubrovačka. Numerous scenes from Postranje, Mlini, Kupari and beyond are living proof.

Films bear witness to times gone by, but also to the changes in our surroundings... Old Town, villages, coastline, and even infrastructure. It's always delightful to visually recall how things used to be, and thanks to tonight’s lecturer, historian Ivan Lujo, mag. hist., Župa traveled back to the distant year of 1918, when the first preserved film shot in Dubrovnik and its surroundings was made. 'Afrodita' is a Hungarian silent film that also stands as the oldest preserved production made in Croatia, rediscovered by dramaturge Hrvoje Ivanković, a collaborator of our guest speaker.

From the recognizable scenes in that film, today significantly altered, of Dubrovnik, Mlini, and the coast, Ivan Lujo guided us through decades of filming in Župa locations, leading us on a historical journey and explaining why certain actions, romances, westerns and other films were shot here.

Thanks to historian Ivan Lujo, we discovered where in Župa films have been made and what roles its places and people have played in various movies and series. Through black-and-white and color film scenes, the audience reminisced about some long-gone Župa landscapes whose charm has attracted directors, both famous and lesser-known, for over a hundred years. The evening ended with anticipation for when this captivating lecture might be repeated for those who missed it!
